Intercession: The Ministry of Standing in the Gap for Others

In Ezekiel 22:30, God says something that is both stirring and haunting: "I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one." The language of standing in the gap — of positioning yourself between a need and its source of help, and holding that position in prayer — is one of the most powerful images for intercession in all of Scripture.

Intercessory prayer is the practice of praying not for yourself, but on behalf of others. It is one of the least glamorous and most significant things a believer can do — a ministry that happens largely in secret, produces results that are rarely directly attributed to it, and yet shapes the lives of individuals, families, churches, and nations in ways that eternity alone will fully reveal.

    The Biblical Basis for Intercession

Intercession is woven through the entire story of Scripture. Abraham interceded for Sodom, boldly negotiating with God over the fate of the city (Genesis 18:22–33). Moses stood in the gap for Israel after the golden calf incident, pleading for the nation's life: "But now, please forgive their sin — but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written" (Exodus 32:32). Paul opened nearly every one of his letters by telling his recipients that he prayed for them — specifically, persistently, by name.

And at the center of it all stands Jesus, whose intercessory ministry did not end at the cross. Hebrews 7:25 tells us that He "always lives to intercede" for those who come to God through Him. The ascended Christ, at the right hand of the Father, is perpetually engaged in intercession on our behalf. When we intercede for others, we are joining an activity already happening in the throne room of heaven — participating in the very work that Jesus Himself is doing.

    Who to Intercede For

Paul's instructions about intercession in 1 Timothy 2:1–2 are broader than most of us practice: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority." The scope of biblical intercession extends from the most intimate (those we love) to the most distant (those who govern, those suffering in places we will never visit, those who have never heard the gospel).

A sustainable intercessory practice usually begins close to home and expands from there. Family members, close friends, colleagues, fellow church members — people whose needs you know in enough detail to pray specifically. From there it extends to the broader church, to those in ministry and mission, to the lost, to communities and nations in crisis. The intercessory life is a life whose circle of concern gradually expands to take in more of what God's heart takes in.

How to Sustain an Intercessory Practice

The challenge with intercession is sustainability. It is easy to pray for someone in an acute moment of crisis. It is harder to pray for them week after week when the urgency has faded. A few practices help.

First, keep a written prayer list. Specificity matters in intercession — not "pray for my friend" but "pray that Sarah finds peace in the waiting and that her diagnosis comes back clear." Written lists also allow you to track answers over time, which builds the faith to keep praying. Second, assign people and situations to specific days of the week so that your intercession is regular rather than reactive. Third, when you don't know what to pray for someone, pray Paul's prayers in Ephesians 1 and 3 and Colossians 1 over them — they are among the most comprehensive intercessions in Scripture and can be prayed for anyone in any situation.

The ministry of intercession is one of the most powerful and most underutilized resources in the body of Christ. Ordinary believers, praying ordinary prayers in ordinary places, have changed the trajectory of lives, families, and histories — because the God who answers prayer is extraordinary. Stand in the gap. Someone needs you there.

"He always lives to intercede for them." — Hebrews 7:25

Lord, make us people who pray for others with the same consistency and love with which You intercede for us. Show us who needs someone to stand in the gap for them today — and give us the faithfulness to keep standing. Amen.
